Getting Ready

The news is filtering out that I am embarking on another of my crazy adventures. This time, I hope and plan to bike across Canada. I don’t know yet if I am fit enough; I am sure I don’t realize half of the effort that will be required of me. However, I do know it will be an incredible way to see this vast and wonderful country we call ours, and to connect with fellow Canadians to find out what we have in common. I have heard so many stories from people who have done this trip, and all say that Canadians are warm, generous and very supportive.

To fill you in on some of the details, Albert and I hope to be en route in our new van by June 13th or 14th, 2005. Albert has outfitted the van with a bed, and I will also take a tent and sleeping bags along to camp along the way. Albert will fly back home in time for the July 2nd church service, and in the meantime, Adele Kee will fly out to Victoria, B.C. so that she can drive the support vehicle from June 28th until the Thursday before Labour Day. After that, Cam Russell will take over, to geet me through to St. John's, Newfoundland.

For the month of July, I will be joined by a friend I first met when cycling across PEI two years ago, Monique LeBlanc. She happened to pass me on the trail while I was taking a break, and I knew she was travelling some distance by the luggage she was carrying. I caught up with her, and we started chatting, and agreed to have lunch, then dinner together. Eventually, she also stayed at the B&B where Albert and I were booked. She invited us to stay at her home near Shediac, N.B. on our way back home, and we were delighted to meet her husband and daughter there. This past summer we visited again on our way to New York. The “down east” hospitality we have heard so much about is certainly no myth! In August, various friends and relatives have committed to joining me for a day or two at a time, and I will look forward to seeing them for sure.

Meanwhile, I have a lot of work ahead of me to be ready for June 13th, including outfitting the van with curtains, mosquito netting etc., deciding what to take, what route to follow, and approximate rendezvous points and dates. Sometimes, it all seems a little too much, but hey, the result will be worth it, I hope.

For those who are interested, I have decided to make this trip a little more worthwhile by making it a fundraising venture. I invite you to consider sponsoring me by donating either one cent per kilometer, or one dollar per day (both approximately $75.00) to either The Cellar Singers Endowment Fund, or St. James Anglican Church for a special 175 year anniversary project. Cheques should be made out to your chosen organization, with "Nynka's Bike Ride" noted on the memo line. Cheques for The Cellar Singers may be mailed to P.O. Box 2521, Orillia ON L3V 7A3. Cheques for St. James may be mailed to P.O. Box 272, Orillia ON L3V 6J6. Both organizations are registered charities, so you will receive an official receipt for income tax purposes. Please consider it!
